Every year, Ardbeg releases a special bottling for its Committee members — the global community of dedicated fans who sign up for early access to limited releases. Smokiverse is one of those releases: an exploration not just of Ardbeg’s peat, but of peat itself as a chemical phenomenon.
What Ardbeg Committee Releases Mean
The Ardbeg Committee, founded in 2000, is one of the whisky world’s most famous fan communities. Committee Releases are bottled at cask strength, with no colouring or chill-filtration, and released globally before the standard commercial bottling — if a commercial version follows at all. They have included some of Ardbeg’s most celebrated expressions: Supernova, Alligator, Galileo, Dark Cove, and many others. Each explores a specific aspect of Ardbeg’s character, often with a concept or narrative at its centre.
Smokiverse: Mapping the Peat Universe
Smokiverse treats peat not as a single flavour, but as a universe of compounds — phenols, guaiacols, cresols — each contributing differently to the experience of smoke in whisky. The release explores how different peat types, different levels of exposure, and different cask environments interact to create the particular quality of smokiness that Ardbeg is known for: not just heavy, but complex, layered, and paradoxically sweet.
Mika’s Perspective
What I find most interesting about Smokiverse is the ambition behind it — using a single distillery’s annual release as an opportunity to teach something about the chemistry of what makes Ardbeg taste like Ardbeg. The marketing is clever, but the whisky underneath it is genuine. At cask strength, it delivers everything Ardbeg does best: that layering of sweet and smoky that seems impossible but is consistent across every serious expression they make.
