Kameda Distillery’s approach to cask selection is built on one underlying principle: find the combinations that create complexity and internal tension, not just elegance. The heavily peated new make spirit matured in a peach brandy cask is one of the most direct expressions of this philosophy.
The Concept
Tsunoda-shacho at Kameda has said clearly that he is drawn to whisky that holds contradictions — sweetness alongside intensity, softness alongside power. The peach brandy cask was not chosen because it makes the whisky easier or more approachable. It was chosen because peach brandy — a spirit with pronounced stone fruit sweetness — creates a specific kind of friction against heavily peated barley spirit.
What results, in theory and apparently in practice, is a whisky where the sweetness does not soften the peat but frames it: each drinking the other’s depth rather than cancelling it out.
Alongside the Cherry Head
The peach brandy cask expression was released alongside a Cherry Head expression — a name that refers to the headspace of cherry brandy-treated casks. The two bottles represent related but distinct variations on the same theme: how specific fruit spirit residues in casks change the character of peated Kameda spirit during maturation.
These are the kinds of experiments that a distillery can only run when its founders are genuinely curious — not about what sells, but about what the spirit can become in the right container, with the right time.
